The Mets’ disappointing season still has another week left, but owner Steve Cohen already is making progress on significant upgrades, including front-office personnel to help embattled president of baseball operations David Stearns.
“I’ve been working with the front office and I’ve identified some things that we can do better,” Cohen said during a fourth-inning visit with the SNY booth during Saturday’s broadcast. “I think they have really good processes up there, but I thought there were areas of improvement that we can work on. We’re going to try to add certain voices to the front office that I think will be helpful.”
There has been talk about adding a general manager below Stearns since he was hired in September 2023, but those conversations fizzled out after the Mets’ surprise dash to the NLCS the following season. This year, however, Stearns has been under fire for delivering a $380 million bust, which apparently was enough to rekindle the idea of supplementing his analytics-heavy perspective.
“It doesn’t have to be a GM,” Cohen said. “I think the whole point is get more opinions in the front office. People who are pretty good either evaluating talent or people who have been in those positions before in the front office and [can] help David out.”
Cohen also commented on this week’s Pete Alonso lovefest, which turned the Citi Field fans against the Mets during numerous standing ovations, chants and even a curtain call after his 300th home run.
“You can’t make it up,” Cohen said. “It was so crazy. Listen, the fans, they’re passionate, and when they feel something, they’re going to let you know, and I’m OK with that. Pete hits his 300th home run and it’s sort of poetic. Sort of amazing that it all occurred at the same time.”
