FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Justin Fields is moving closer to returning to Jets practice.
Fields took part in individual position drills and 7-on-7 play during Saturday’s practice. The Jets are not rushing to put him in full team competition because they don’t want anyone stepping on his right foot. Fields left practice on a cart Thursday after suffering a dislocated toe.
“Just trying to ease him in,” Aaron Glenn said.
Fields jogged a little and went through some stretching and conditioning exercises on Friday but didn’t take part in any drills. This was another positive step. The Jets said he is day-to-day.
“It’s going to be a collaborative process to make sure that he’s ready-ready when he gets involved in team drills and things like that,” Glenn said. “I thought he did a good job in the 7-on-7. He has a ways to go until we get him out there, and we’re going to make sure we keep the protocol going to get him ready.”
Hall’s future
Breece Hall is in a contract year, but the fourth-year back doesn’t expect to get an extension before the season starts. He said playing for a new coach and general manager (Darren Mougey), he has to prove himself.
“I’m not their guy, so for me I got to prove it every day,” Hall said. “I got a chip on my shoulder. I feel like right now, OK, it’s my last chance for me . . . I don’t really want to discuss all the other stuff for me, I just want to worry about ball right now.”
Hall is confident in his ability. He also believes he can prove himself playing in this system and for this coaching staff. He said the environment is more stable than it was with the previous regime.
“In the past, there’s been a lot of instability and stuff around the whole operation,” Hall said. “I feel like this year everybody’s bought into this coaching staff, everybody’s bought into our GM, everybody’s bought into owners, too. So it feels a lot better around here coming in every day.”
