Newsday Golfer of the Year: Caylin Wong, Great Neck District, Sr.
Caylin Wong had 18 holes left in her high school golf career. With Great Neck trailing by five strokes after Day One, Wong helped deliver the school’s first state championship.
“On the second day, to go out and make six birdies and improve by 10 shots shows the level she can compete at,” Great Neck coach Matt Corrigan said. “And to shoot 1-under par and jump all the way up the standings and help us win was a tremendous performance.”
Wong shot a 1-under-par 71 on the second day of the state tournament. As a senior, she was instrumental in Great Neck’s dynasty. The program has won six straight county and Long Island titles, and Wong played a major role in all of them since she was a seventh grader.
Great Neck girls golf finally got over the hump, and Wong made her mark. She finished tied for eighth place at the state tournament, the highest finish among Long Island golfers.
“She has legendary status in our school,” Corrigan said. “She was the rock at the top of our lineup for at least the past four years, and she saved her best show for last.”

Eloise Alveari, Kellenberg, Fr.
The freshman from Kellenberg placed second in the NSCHSGAA championship. Alveari then took third at the state CHSAA tournament, shooting a 6-over-par 78.
Madison Chen, Manhasset, Sr.
Chen finished second at the county championship, shooting a 2-over-par 144. She was Newsday’s Golfer of the Year in 2025 and a two-time county champion.
Lara Cohen, Roslyn, Soph.
The sophomore won the Nassau championship, shooting a 1-over-par 143 over two days to capture her first county individual title.
Ella Girard, Ward Melville, Sr.
Girard capped off her career with a third-place finish in Suffolk. She also finished seventh among Long Island golfers at the state championship, placing 25th after shooting a 16-over-par 160.
Taerin Lee, Jericho, 7th Grade
Lee was consistently among the top golfers despite being only a seventh grader. She finished second at the county championship with a 2-over-par 144, then tied for 10th at the state tournament after shooting a 9-over-par 153.
Emilia Parlow, St. Anthony’s, Soph.
Parlow won her second consecutive NSCHSGAA girls golf individual championship. She placed second at the state CHSAA tournament with a 3-over-par 75.
Elie Poremba, Southampton, Soph.
The talented sophomore captured the Suffolk championship for the second time in her career. She shot a 12-over-par 158 to win the title and helped Southampton/Pierson claim the team championship.
Coach of the Year: Matt Corrigan, Great Neck District
Great Neck won its sixth consecutive Long Island championship. For the first time since the event was established in 2019, a Long Island team won the girls golf state championship, as Corrigan guided Great Neck to the title.
