It was already Kaylee Dwyer’s favorite day of the year, but the Suffolk singles/doubles tournament is now even more special for the Longwood junior after her stellar performance.
Dwyer rolled a 276 in Game 1 and a 208 in Game 2 for a 484 series, earning the Suffolk ‘A’ singles title on Wednesday afternoon at East Islip Lanes.
“On the way here with my teammates, everyone was hyping themselves up,” Dwyer said. “It’s our favorite day of the year. I’ve been pushing through this year and this is the day to show people just how good I can be.”
Dwyer rolled four strikes to start the first game and earned a spare in the fifth frame. She knocked down seven pins on the final throw of the 10th frame and finished the first game with 10 total strikes.
“I was just so locked in. There was nothing that could distract me,” Dwyer said. “I knew I just had to stick with what I do and have a strong last game to bring it home.”
Dwyer’s 208 in the final game was just enough to keep her ahead of East Islip’s Brooke Andresen, who finished with a 482 series after rolling a 259 in Game 2. Comsewogue’s Izzy Grillo finished with a 449 series, rolling a 227 in Game 1 and a 222 in Game 2.
“You can’t play defense in bowling, so you’ve just got to go out there and do what you’re able to,” Dwyer said. “When you get a really high score, you can’t just settle for something lower next time. You have to put your all into every shot.”
Dwyer and teammate Lexie Cohen took first place in doubles, combining for an 839 in two games. Dwyer rolled a 216 and 207 in the two games, and Cohen rolled a 204 and a 212.
“This was my first time bowling with Kaylee, but each of us has been grinding and working hard,” Cohen said. “This was the time to show all that hard work.”
Andresen and Makayla Boyd placed second for East Islip with a total of 802. Grillo and Rosalia Manfre took third for Comsewogue, rolling a 765 series.
Sabrina Quaranta and Kaylee Tagliamonte of Sachem combined for a 742 to place fourth and Jossalyn Liverpool and Alexis DiBella of Longwood totaled 700 pins to take fifth.
“We just keep picking each other up. We’ve been talking about being able to pull this off,” Cohen said. “I had the perfect partner and it’s certainly a special moment to win in my senior year."
