Bayport-Blue Point’s Colin Clark dashed right of the goal inside the final 20 seconds of the Suffolk Class D championship game before taking a shot. It hit the crossbar and went out of play with about eight seconds left.
No timeouts left. No time to draw up a play.
“We were looking to play fast, hopefully catch them before they got set up,” Bayport-Blue Point coach Doug Meehan said.
In a tie game with overtime looming, Sean Richman took the ball in front of his team’s bench. He beat his defender, cutting toward the middle of the field to take a shot.
“From the release, I knew it was going in,” Richman said. “Coach said, 'Go do something,’ and I did something.”
The ball ripped into the top-right corner with 2.8 seconds left, and within moments, top-seeded Bayport-Blue Point had won the boys lacrosse county title, 7-6, over No. 2 Babylon Saturday at Stony Brook.
“I’ve always been dreaming about this feeling,” Richman said. “I’ve always had thoughts about hitting the game-winner. The dream came true.”

Bayport-Blue Point (11-6) will face the winner of Nassau’s Cold Spring Harbor and Locust Valley at 3 p.m. Saturday back at Stony Brook in the Long Island Class D championship. It’s the Phantoms’ third county title and first since 2024.
Bayport-Blue Point’s Josh Franchak scored with 5:35 left before Babylon’s Colin O’Brien equalized with just 1:40 remaining. Then came Richman’s winner.
O’Brien and Corey Dellafranca had three goals apiece for Babylon (12-4). Thomas Kenny impressed with 11 saves. It didn’t help Babylon to be without standout senior Kai Jankow, who coach John Greaney said suffered a concussion in the second quarter after a hit to the head.
“Kids rallied around and fought back a bit,” Greaney said. “You've got to give Bayport a lot of credit. We had a little bit of momentum going forward in the second half, but they made more plays than we did.”

Bayport-Blue Point’s Pat Ahern led an impressive defensive effort alongside Brayden Waldbauer and Joey Balestra. Clark, whom Meehan hailed as “the experienced veteran,” was terrific defensively and had a goal and an assist. Jamison Hawkins had two goals.
Ahern won the faceoff advantage with an 11-for-17 day against a talented FOGO in Babylon’s Brady Shaw. He credited coach Corey Clifford and said he “takes a lot of pride” in his faceoff ability.
Ahern recalled facing Babylon in football for the county championship, which was also at LaValle Stadium.
“Playing them again at Stony Brook, and beating them with [3] seconds left,” Ahern said, “it’s really a special moment for me and the whole team.”
