MIDDLETOWN — Cold Spring Harbor carried memories of the painful loss at Middletown High that brought last season to a screeching halt. Chenango Forks scored with 2.1 seconds left in the state Class D boys lacrosse semifinals, ending the Seahawks’ run at a fourth straight state title.

So when Cold Spring Harbor met Section I champ Bronxville here in this same round Thursday night, the Seahawks were rather motivated.

“Going into this game, we knew this is where we lost, coming back here with all the boys,” junior middie Colby Koenigsberger said. “And so we wanted to win this really badly.”

And it showed. Koenigsberger delivered four goals and three assists as Cold Spring Harbor emerged with a convincing 14-5 win.

So the Seahawks (17-3) will play for the championship at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva against Section III champ Marcellus, the team they beat in the 2023 and 2024 state title games.

“To get back to the state final, it’s an unbelievable feeling,” Cold Spring Harbor coach Dennis Bonn said. “ ... It left everybody with a bad taste in our mouths, especially the kids that were on the team last year. I know they wanted it bad.

“Listen, we’re fortunate enough; we’re going to play on Sunday. We’re going to play on the last day of the season, and there’s nothing better than that.”

No one felt better about that than Roy Testa.

The standout junior attackman blamed himself for last year’s loss. After he scored the tying goal, his shot for the win was stopped with about 30 seconds left.

This time he scored two goals and assisted on a third, and he left victorious.

“It’s a great feeling, especially compared to last year,” Testa said. “I thought about it throughout the season, about how much that feeling of losing [stinks] and how much pain that it is because you know you worked so hard and you know all of your teammates worked so hard for it.”

Bronxville led 4-3 before Andrew Ioannou, Testa, Koenigsberger and Rex O’Connor scored for Cold Spring Harbor. It was 7-4 at halftime, and the second half was one long 7-1 run.

“I think the turning point was when we decided that we really wanted to pick up ground balls,” Bonn said. “ ... We gave up one [goal] in the second half. We dominated ground balls, and that’s really what the difference was.”
