The key-injury category was stacked for Manhasset for a while during the regular season. But this team started to get well, and by the regular-season finale, the key-injury category had been reduced to none.

So second-seeded Manhasset showed what it can do in beating No. 7 Carey in the quarterfinals of the Nassau Class B boys lacrosse tournament, and then with an 11-1 win over No. 3 Bethpage in the semis Thursday at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.

But the clock was stopped with just 1.2 showing because a Manhasset player was lying on the turf with an injury. It put an immediate damper on the resounding victory that brought a ticket to play No. 1 Garden City for the title at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Hofstra.

Michael DePietro had hurt his back. Coach Nick Armstrong said, “He got pushed into a cross-check, which folded his back backwards, like more than it’s supposed to.”

The standout junior defenseman went down hard. He was placed on a stretcher and left via an ambulance bound for Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

“It’s horrible, especially the last seconds,” Manhasset freshman goalie Andrew Limberg said.

There was positive news in the evening, though.

“He’s going to be fine,” Armstrong said. “He was able to get up and walk around. All signs are looking good.”

Armstrong said “a decision will be made closer to game day” on whether the UMass commit can play in the final, a rematch of last year’s clash. Garden City won 13-5 and went on to take a state title. The teams met on May 2 and the Trojans prevailed again, this time 14-6.

“With the effort and energy, we can [win],” Manhasset freshman midfielder Tommy Kasselakis said. “And if we play as a team, I think anything is possible.”

Conor Sheerin topped Manhasset with two goals and two assists. Tommy Leder contributed two goals and one assist. Kasselakis also had three points on a goal and two assists.

Manhasset (14-4) led just 1-0 after one quarter on Leder’s goal 1:06 in.

But by halftime, Manhasset was ahead 5-1. It pulled away in the third, going up 8-1.

Colin Waxer scored for Bethpage. Limberg finished with nine saves.

The Golden Eagles finished at 9-8.

“This senior group, in particular, they’ve been to the semifinals three times,” Bethpage coach Patrick Gorman said. “I just can’t express how much they mean to this program.”
