These two powerful boys lacrosse teams from the Nassau power leagues, Syosset and Farmingdale, were out there working overtime on Syosset’s turf early Thursday evening.
Then Brody Waxer had a chance to end it for the home team.
Just missed. Clanked off the pipe.
“I knew I was going to have another chance,” Waxer said.
About a minute later, the Michigan-bound midfielder/attackman indeed had that chance. Josh Weisenfeld made his 12th save and Syosset headed the other way. Noah Berch ultimately fed Waxer, and the sensational senior bounced a shot in from about 5 yards with 2:18 left in the four-minute extra period.
His fourth goal capped a stirring 10-9 comeback win.
“We were down, but we were never out of it,” Waxer said after seeing Syosset rally from down 6-2 in the second quarter and finally tie it on Ryan Rosenfeld’s goal with 43 seconds left in regulation. “This year has been special. This is my fifth year on the team . . . I’ve never had this team chemistry before.”
This team is up to 9-1 after the uplifting victory, its first over Farmingdale in five years.
“I have to tell you that this is a special group and they are destined for great things,” coach John Calabria said. “ . . . Tremendous Class A victory.”
Matteo Asencio, Sean Schumeyer and Jack Watrous each contributed two goals for the 8-2 Dalers.
“This is a great group of kids,” coach Eric Dunne said. “I know they’ll take this to heart and we’ll work and we’ll be better from it.”
Matt Antonacci skipped in a shot from 10 yards, cutting Farmingdale’s edge to 9-8 with 2:18 remaining in the fourth. Then Antonacci fed Rosenfeld. The senior middie tied it on a bouncer from about 12 yards.
“I just knew I had to step up,” Rosenfeld said. “I love these boys . . . This team is unlike anything else that I’ve ever been a part of.”
The Dalers led 7-4 at halftime, but Syosset persevered. When Waxer made a long run and scored the final goal of the third, its deficit was down to 8-7.
“He always puts our team in a position to win, in the right spot, making the right plays,” Calabria said.
Perhaps these teams will meet again in the postseason. Calabria believes they will.
“I said that to every (Farmingdale) kid on the handshake line,” he said. “I said, ‘I’ll see you in May.’ ”
