The rebound was right there for Ryan Rosenfeld. He knew what he had to do.

“I see the ball on the ground,” the Syosset senior midfielder said. “I’ve got to pick up the trash and put it in for my boys.”

But this wasn’t just another garbage goal. Friday’s lacrosse game against Massapequa was a Nassau I-A regular-season finale, and the top seed in the county’s Class A tournament was at stake.

Brody Waxer scored seven times, but Rosenfeld’s second goal with 2:54 left in overtime was the ultimate difference in Syosset’s 13-12 home victory.

“There’s something special about this group,” Syosset coach John Calabria said. “They’ve grown over the course of the year from a character standpoint and they’re loving each other. And when you have a team that does that, when the chips are down or you’re in a high-pressure situation, they’re going to come through.”

Both Calabria and Massapequa coach Kevin Catalano fully expect a sequel to take place between these powerhouse teams with a county crown at stake, No. 1 vs. No. 2.

“We’re definitely going to see them again,” Calabria said. “Massapequa’s a great program. This is a great Massapequa team. I’ve been here for 27 years, one of the best teams that have come through here for Massapequa.”

Rocco Spallina scored five times and Nolan Wieczorek delivered three goals and four assists for Massapequa (13-3, 6-2).

“They’re a good team,” Catalano said of Syosset (14-2, 7-1). “… Coach Calabria is going to get his guys ready.”

Braden Tucker tied it at 11-11 for Massapequa with 3:03 left in the fourth. Then Noah Berch fed the cutting Waxer for a goal 21 seconds later. But Tyler Byrnes forced OT with 36 seconds remaining.

“I just knew we were going to have another shot to end it,” Waxer said. “… We’re just an overtime team. We were 2-0 in overtime. We just made it 3-0. We’re good under pressure, and I think that has a lot to do with our coaches. It has a lot to do with our culture. This team is something special.”

Syosset led 6-3 in the second quarter.

“We’ve got to come out faster,” Catalano said.

Massapequa rallied to take a 7-6 halftime edge. It was 9-9 after three.

“We’ll see them again in a couple of weeks,” Catalano said. “So this is just fuel for the fire. … I think it’s going to be a different outcome.”
