Mount Sinai was having trouble finishing what it started offensively. Center Moriches’ future D-I goalie, Michael Albino, also had a bit to do with that, keeping the Mustangs off the scoreboard.
So they were down by two with 90 seconds left in the first quarter. And then the game turned. Mount Sinai scored nine straight goals from late in the first through early in the fourth.
Tommy Massaro finished with four goals, Dontae Spadaro contributed three goals and one assist and William Glandorf III posted two goals and three assists in Tuesday’s 10-4 Suffolk II win at Center Moriches.
“I think we started to play as a team,” Glandorf said. “I think we spread the ball very well. Defensively, our goalie (Sean Steimle) played very well. I think we talked a lot, communicated.”
This lacrosse team wants to finish what it starts in the postseason as well after what happened last year. The Mustangs (7-4, 6-3) have extra fuel to go chase a Suffolk Class C championship after falling 7-6 in the semis to Bayport-Blue Point, which is now in D.
“No one likes that feeling — you’re close, but you lose,” Mount Sinai coach Harold Drumm said. “So I think it does stick with some of the kids. I think they play with that in their mind.”
There was a lesson to be learned by such a close loss in such a big game.
“Not to make too many mistakes and be mistake free all over the field,” Massaro said.
The Rutgers commit’s faceoff work was another reason for this victory.
“I think he won 98% of the faceoffs, so they took a lot of possessions,” Red Devils coach Mike Vitulli said. “They’re able to grind you down just number of possession-wise.”
Doug Ruhs and Charles Dechiaro each had the first of their two goals to put Center Moriches (7-4, 5-4) up 2-0. Then the senior Spadaro scored late in the first and early in the second, beating the junior Albino, his future teammate at Marist, who made 13 saves.
“He’s a great goalie,” Spadaro said. “ . . . I’m excited to play with him.”
Massaro and Glandorf scored, and it was 4-2 at halftime. Massaro delivered twice in the third. The advantage was 8-2 after three against a Center Moriches team that’s hoping to reach the Suffolk D title game and repeat.
As Vitulli put it, “We have enough talent to get there and do it.”
