Last week's ranking in parentheses
1. St. Anthony’s (1)
Not only did St. Anthony’s (6-3) defeat a powerhouse program in New Jersey’s Don Bosco, but it also beat USA Lacrosse’s No. 8 team in Malverne (Pa.) Prep, 12-10, in a thriller on Saturday. The road doesn’t get any easier with reigning CHSAA Class AA state champions in Iona Prep and a highly ranked Lawrenceville team coming up this week. But these Friars appear to be up to the task.
2. Chaminade (2)
Chaminade (7-3) didn’t play this week. Both New Canaan and Boston College come to Mineola this week ahead of the annual “Reg’s Rock” game on Saturday between Chaminade and Manhasset; a must-see game with both teams as good as ever.
3. Garden City (3)
Garden City faced a high-firing Massapequa offense and held it to just two first-half goals in an 11-7 win on Tuesday. Then the Trojans comfortably beat Northport, 19-7, on Saturday. A defensive effort led by Andrew Dengler and Merit Ruckh has resulted in Garden City (9-0) winning all its games by at least four goals while not conceding more than seven goals in a game.
4. Manhasset (5)
Two games, two dominant wins for Manhasset (8-1) this week. There may be no better defensive group than Manhasset, which held Long Beach and Port Washington to a mere three goals combined.
5. Massapequa (4)
For the first time this season, Massapequa (6-1) was held to single-digit scoring in its 11-7 loss to Garden City. That won’t become a trend for this team. A busy week awaits with Kellenberg, Port Washington and East Islip on deck.
6. Syosset (10)
There’s a ton to like about Syosset (8-1), which flexed the ability to outscore Wantagh in an 18-16 thriller this week behind the dynamic duo of Brody Waxer and Gio Accardo. Syosset carries a five-game winning streak into a huge week, with Farmingdale and West Islip coming up.
7. Farmingdale (9)
How about Jake Kunz? His two goals made the difference in a 7-5 win for Farmingdale (7-1) over South Side before the Dalers added a 13-7 win over Long Beach. Farmingdale’s defense, headlined by star Michael Galgano, has allowed a mere six goals per game.
8. Northport (6)
Northport’s 17-16 win over Lindenhurst could serve as a county final preview, but it also highlights just how close Suffolk’s Class A may be with teams like Sachem North and Ward Melville lingering as well. The Tigers (6-2) will lick their wounds following their loss to Garden City ahead of the 24th annual Louis J. Acampora Jamboree on Saturday.
9. Wantagh (8)
A two-goal loss to Syosset sees the team drop a spot from a week ago, though a comfortable 11-5 win over East Islip serves as a reminder that Wantagh (7-3) remains one of the best out there.
10. Sachem North (unranked)
Sachem North (7-1) rebounded from its loss to Wantagh last week with one-sided wins over Sachem East and Huntington, but the real test awaits Tuesday against Lindenhurst in a battle of Class A teams.
On the cusp: Cold Spring Harbor, Smithtown East, Port Washington, South Side, Shoreham-Wading River.
