The Suffolk boys soccer Class A playoffs don’t begin until Saturday. Though if you were in Amityville Wednesday afternoon, it looked like the playoffs had begun early as Glenn and Amityville battled for the League V title and the top seed in the class.

For a while, it looked like the two may have had to settle for being co-champions as 90 minutes came and went. Then, in the 93rd minute, Glenn's Cian Daly stepped up to take a corner kick.

The ball fell to the right foot of James D’Angeli, who had limped off midway through the first half after a defender’s knee collided with his quad. He entered Wednesday tied with Mattituck’s Connor Searl for the most goals on Long Island (22).

The senior captain will awake Thursday — albeit with a bruise, he thinks — with that honor all to himself.

D’Angeli jumped and scored, running to the corner flag as his teammates flooded the field at Amityville Memorial High School in a 1-0 double-overtime win for Glenn.

“Out of the three league titles, this is definitely my favorite one,” D’Angeli said. “That was an amazing way to end it, but we still have at least two, three more games before we can win the county and hopefully go even farther.”

D’Angeli’s goal may have never come if not for the heroics of Glenn goalkeeper David Palencia, who made an outstanding save in the first overtime period to deny a goal from Amityville’s dynamic star Jayson Ramirez.

“He gives us a chance to win games, and he did it again today,” Glenn coach Lou Hanner said of Palencia, who made five saves. “I’m super happy for the kid. He’s worked so hard, he’s come so, so far … I think he might be the best keeper in the league; he’s at least up there.”

Glenn (14-1, 11-1) and Amityville (12-4, 10-2) each put three shots on goal in regular time. Amityville’s Kevin Albarenga impressed as an outside back, with coach Mike Abbondondolo describing the sophomore as “the epitome of what we want in the program.”

Abbondondolo, who earned his 200th win as head coach against Miller Place on Oct. 14, had to console his team after the result. It spoke to the effort Amityville, as well as Glenn, put into Wednesday’s game in front of a packed sideline of parents and supporters.

“We’ll have to take some time to feel these emotions, get over them and then prepare, starting tomorrow, for the first round on Saturday,” Abbondondolo said.
