Port Washington boys soccer's Jason Vorfi scores twice in win over Freeport

The Port Washington team bus rolled into the Freeport High lot Friday at close to 5 p.m. The Nassau Conference AAA soccer game for those boys inside was scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
“Traveling from Port Washington to Freeport on a Friday afternoon for a three-day weekend, traffic is crazy,” Vikings coach Stephan Brossard said. “But that’s kind of how this goes.
“We know when we get here, we’re going to have limited warm-up time, and we have to be ready to go as soon as we get here.”
They were ready. The game started at 5:34, and the Vikings scored twice in the first 13:40 on the way to a 5-1 win.
So Port Washington bounced back nicely from a 2-0 loss to a strong Oceanside side. Brossard said that “it tells a lot about our character and the type of team we know we can be.”
Jason Vorfi scored two goals and Austin Vaezi delivered a goal and an assist to help the Vikings move to 3-3-1. They’re shooting to reach a county final after exiting in the semis last season.
“… This is a talented group as shown out here today,” Brossard said. “If they come together like they did tonight and put these kind of games for the rest of the season, then I would not want to play us.”
Freeport was missing its best player, senior striker/midfielder Kevin Leon, who was out with a knee injury. The Red Devils fell to 1-3-2.
“We have a lot of games ahead of us,” coach Craig Klasson said, “and it’s about how you finish, not how you start.”
Diego Chavez Varela crossed the ball to Vorfi for a tap-in near the left post, good for a 1-0 edge just 7:46 in.
“We started strong,” Vorfi said. “We had to stay strong the whole time.”
Then Peter Russo sent a cross to Antonio Capobianco, and he fired a hard shot into the net.
“It’s very difficult to try to bounce back after two early mistakes,” Klasson said.
It stayed 2-0 until the final 13 minutes of the game.
Vaezi fed Vorfi — 3-0.
Jesus Sorto then scored on a penalty kick for Freeport. But Benjamin Ahern countered with a goal. And Vaezi curled in a long shot.
“I just think we’re building a lot of chemistry,” Vaezi said. “… We’re having fun. You can really feel it.”
