To this point, nothing can stop the Manhasset field hockey team.
The Nassau titlist dominated Harborfields, 3-0, to earn its first Long Island Class B title since 2021 on Tuesday night at Adelphi.
Manhasset was coming off its first win over Garden City in a county championship in 14 years, and coach Danielle Groneman said the momentum carried through.
“There’s always a lot of pressure at Garden City, but I knew that once we got that off our back that we were just going to have fun and play today,” Groneman said. “We’re going to show upstate how Long Island plays. I’m happy that we made it out of Nassau to show everybody that.”
Manhasset (18-0) will visit the winner of Our Lady of Lourdes (Section IX)/Lakeland (Section I) in the Class B regional final Sunday. Harborfields finished 18-2.
Manhasset absolutely dominated possession, but the Tornadoes defense was difficult to penetrate. Harborfields goalkeeper Callie Schomburg made 21 saves.
Manhasset earned seven penalty corners before one proved fruitful late in the first half. After swinging the ball across the top of the circle, Reese Chung sent it in from the top and Katie Farrer found the deflection, giving Manhasset a 1-0 halftime lead.
“We had so many opportunities to get it in there but their goalie was actually on fire,” Farrer said. “But, once we put that first goal in, then we really start moving and that's what happened today.”
From then on, the ’Set couldn’t be stopped. With four minutes left in the third quarter, Abigail Bauer collected a rebound off the goalkeeper's pads and sent it right back to the net. Then, Eden Randall sealed the deal. She hit a reverse sweep that went over Schomburg’s head in the fourth quarter.
“Since Day One we’ve been working toward this,” Bauer said. “We knew that counties was probably going to be our biggest challenge and we got over that, so once we got to this game, we knew it would be only up from here. We’re just going to keep going.”
Manhasset’s defense did an incredible job shutting down the Tornadoes, holding them to only one penalty corner that was swiftly defused. Goalkeeper Annie Spina didn’t even need to make a save.
“Our defense has been amazing,” Groneman said. “Today they were really great. They got the ball out of the circle so fast that [Harborfields] didn’t even have a chance to get any corners, so I’m very proud of them.”
