Consistency has been key for the Massapequa field hockey team all season.

And steady play did the trick for the team again on Friday. Top-seeded Massapequa took down No. 2 Port Washington, 4-1, to earn its sixth straight Nassau Class A championship at Cold Spring Harbor High School. Giuliana Guerriero scored twice in the win.

“This one feels really special because not only is it my first year on this team, but we knew Port Washington really wanted to win this one," Guerriero said, "and we just wanted it more.

Massapequa (11-5) plays Northport in the Long Island Class A championship in a state subregional contest at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Adelphi. Port Washington finished 8-8-1.

Massapequa built its lead early. On a penalty corner halfway through the first quarter, Guerriero tipped in a deflection from Kaitlyn Terranova to put Massapequa up by one.

Then, with 4:19 remaining in the half, Massapequa extended its lead on another penalty corner. From the stroke line, Terranova collected a rebound off the right pipe and sent the ball directly back to the cage to give her team a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Port Washington was kept off the board until the third quarter when Lexi Raskin scored on a penalty corner, but it wasn’t for a lack of opportunities. The Vikings earned 15 penalty corners to Massapequa’s seven, but Brooke Donnellan and the rest of the defensive line shut them down each time.

“It means so much to me to finish my senior season with a six-peat,” Donnellan said. “But we’re not even done yet. This team has so much talent. Everyone, from our goalies to our offense to our sideline, has so much talent and I’m so excited to see where this season continues to go.”

Guerriero found the cage again and Delaney Diesso scored on a reverse sweep in the third quarter to cap the scoring. In the fourth quarter, Massapequa’s defense settled in to seal the win.

Coach Morgan Ortega said six county championships in a row is a testament to the winning culture Massapequa has built over the years. Next, she and her team hope to capture Massapequa’s first Long Island title since 2006.

“They really are a family,” Ortega said. “This group just loves coming together to play and we have a lot of girls who want to continue the tradition that they’ve built. It continues to grow each year and I love that they live up to that every time.”
