CORTLAND - It has been a magical playoff run for the MacArthur flag football team.

The Generals needed last-second heroics in both their county and Long Island championship victories. In the Class B state semifinals, they needed another special second half against Section I power Yorktown.

But this time, the Generals fell short, losing 20-0 at Homer High School Saturday.

It was the first loss of the season for MacArthur (18-1-1). Yorktown improved to 20-1.

“It just wasn’t our day,” MacArthur coach Steve Fazzolari said. “It doesn’t take away anything these girls did. I am so proud of them. It’s a great group of girls. I was proud of the effort they put out there, but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way.”

The Generals trailed 13-0 in the third quarter but found themselves in the midst of their best drive of the game. Gina Iannuzzi found Alexa Coppola for a 7-yard gain and drew a roughing-the-passer penalty on third-and-5 from the MacArthur 35-yard line. Five plays later, Iannuzzi connected with Meaghan Campbell for an 18-yard gain to put the Generals at Yorktown’s 16-yard line.

. Moving on that drive gave us energy," Campbell said. "We play our best when we have fun. But credit to them, they are a great team. We had a great run. It was amazing to see everything we worked hard for come to fruition with the championships we won.”

The drive ended when Yorktown’s Eva Monaco hauled in an interception in the end zone with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter.

Yorktown sophomore quarterback Sophia Marcello found freshman receiver Erin Duffy for an 11-yard touchdown with 7:56 remaining to extend the lead to 20 points. It was the duo's third touchdown connection of the game.

“They were just good athletes,” Fazzolari said. “They made plays, and we were trying out there, but they made the play when they had to. This sport is producing some phenomenal athletes everywhere.”

On the next drive, Iannuzzi found Taylor Garro twice for gains of 14 and 9 yards, but the possession ended on downs as the clock wound down on MacArthur’s season.

“This season was everything I could’ve ever dreamed of,” Garro said. “I feel so blessed to be here right now, win or lose. This is the best team I’ve ever had, and I love every single one of these girls.”
