Hauppauge’s offense delivered a fantastic start, but its defense ensured the Eagles remained unbeaten.
On Northport’s final possession, it was Hauppauge’s Taylor Mileti who came away with a sack on third-and-goal for a loss of nine yards. On fourth-and-goal, the pass fell incomplete with five seconds left to end the game.
Mileti completed 15 of 18 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns to guide host Hauppauge to a 14-6 victory over Northport in non-league girls flag football on Thursday.
“We just kept working hard and never gave up on each play,” Mileti said. “We stay together, and the sideline is a great part of our team, always lifting each other up.”
On the opening drive, Mileti fired a dart over the middle to Lindsay Adams, who took it 50 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles led 6-0 with 9:09 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Mileti found Charlotte Derby three times on the same drive. The third completion was an 18-yard touchdown pass. The pair connected on a 2-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead with 2:07 remaining in the second quarter.
“Northport is a top contending team, and they do a phenomenal job,” Hauppauge coach Steve Mileti said. “I’m also proud of my girls. They had their backs against the wall, and they stood together.”
Northport responded with a successful two-minute drill. It was capped off by Grace Gilmartin finding Hazel Carlson for a 26-yard touchdown to trim the deficit to eight heading into halftime.
Carlson then led the way defensively. She had 15 flag pulls to help keep Hauppauge (7-0) off the scoreboard and to just one first down in the second half.
“Hazel, you know, she was incredible the whole game,” Northport coach Patrick Campbell said. “She is really tough and I was telling her I don’t remember seeing a kid having that good of a game on defense.”
In the fourth quarter, Northport (3-3) had multiple possessions with goal-to-go, but the pressure from Adams, Derby and Mileti helped Hauppauge prevail.
“In these tight games, I know every single play has to be complete energy,” Adams said. “The sideline really helps, too. We all know how to stick together, and everyone cheering each other on makes us work harder.”
