After a turbulent start to the season, Sheepshead Bay has flashed back to last November.
The Sharks have seemingly returned to championship form, dominating both sides of the ball in a 40-14 home win against James Madison on Saturday in a rematch of last year's PSAL 3A title game.
Sheepshead Bay (2–2) — which punctuated last season’s historic 13–0 title run with a 46-6 victory over James Madison — is back to .500 following back-to-back big wins. Sheepshead last week beat Harry S Truman, 34-0.
“We gotta just lock in and get back to Sheepshead Bay Sharks Football,” coach Ubeaka McKinney said. “Once we do that, we know we can rinse and repeat what we did last year. We had a solid week of practice, the kids moved around, and today they showed up and made plays.”
Anthony Milan found the end zone in nearly every way imaginable, recording a touchdown reception, a kickoff return and a pick-6.
Quarterback Jayden Browne completed 10 of 20 passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. Emmanuel Boyce finished with six catches for 107 yards and two scores.
James Madison (1–3) had no answer for Sheepshead Bay’s suffocating defense, which generated three takeaways. Michael Howard accounted for two of them, recording an interception and a fumble recovery in the first quarter alone.
It was all Sheepshead Bay in the first half. Browne staked the Sharks to an 18–0 lead with 8:34 left in the second quarter behind a 52-yard touchdown pass to Boyce, a 2-yard rushing score and — following an onside kick recovery — another 13-yard touchdown connection with Milan.
James Madison got on the board in highlight-reel fashion, as junior Travys Leahy took Sheepshead Bay’s next kickoff 75 yards to the house for a touchdown to make it 18–6 with eight minutes left in the first half. But the momentum was short-lived. Immediately afterward, Milan answered with his own 75-yard kickoff-return TD, stretching the Sharks’ lead back to 18 points ahead of the break.
Shortly after intermission, linebacker Nicholas Vikki picked off Browne for a second time to set the Knights up at the Sharks' 43-yard line. James Madison capped its eight-play drive with a 2-yard rushing TD from junior quarterback Rayniel Valerio Villanueva. He rushed in again for a two-point conversion, trimming the deficit to 24–14 with 3:25 left in the third.
It wouldn’t get any closer. With 11 minutes left in the fourth, Browne dished to Boyce on a perfectly-executed screen play for a 32-yard touchdown. Browne then punched in the two-point conversion to take a 32–14 lead.
A few plays later, Milan scored on a 50-yard pick-6. Browne added another two-point run.
After making his presence felt across the field, Milan credited his coaches and teammates with constantly putting him in the right position.
“I know I’m that guy,” Milan said, “but it’s about being a team player — helping my teammates, listening to my coaches. They’re going to lead me to the right path.”
