With just over five minutes to go in the county final, hope was starting to shrink for Shoreham-Wading River’s girls basketball team.
The Wildcats were down by 10, but the Keegan twins never had a doubt.
Anabel and Kady Keegan sparked a run that saw Shoreham-Wading River score 12 straight points to take a two-point lead with 2:02 remaining.
“With the crowd and everyone here it was kind of crazy,” Anabel Keegan said. “But I looked at the clock, I looked at everyone on our team and we shut everyone else out, and we were like, 'We need to calm down and do this' and we did it.”
Anabel Keegan scored 16 points and Kady Keegan finished with 12 points to lead third-seeded Shoreham-Wading River over top-seeded Mount Sinai, 44-41, in the Suffolk Class A girls basketball championship at Stony Brook Arena on Friday.
Shoreham-Wading River (20-2) plays the winner of Plainedge/Floral Park at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Stony Brook Arena in the Long Island Class A championship in a state subregional contest.
Shoreham-Wading River held a 39-38 lead with 52 seconds left and had possession. The Keegan twins went with something they’ve done seemingly a million times. Kady found Anabel on a pick-and-roll, and Anabel finished in traffic to go up three with 32.7 seconds left.
“In lacrosse we do the same exact thing,” Kady Keegan said. “I trust her. We both have so much trust in each other and obviously she’s like 6-foot, but I know if I lob it she’ll be strong and she pulls away in these moments and comes away with amazing plays.”
Mount Sinai (17-4) then trailed by four but responded. Alexa Cergol connected from beyond the arc to trim the deficit to one with 23.3 seconds left. She finished with a team-high 15 points.
All eyes then turned to junior Shea Varbero on the free-throw line. She sank both foul shots to give the Wildcats a 44-41 lead.
Mount Sinai had two three-point attempts in the final 10 seconds, but missed both shots.
After scoring only 26 points through the first three quarters, Shoreham-Wading River scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to collect its first Suffolk girls basketball title since 2023.
“Our kids never quit, they don’t give up,” coach Christian Coster said. “It’s not one of them, it’s 18 of them. Every time they come into the gym they believe they can do it. We’re a family, like it says on the shirts, and all the girls step up and they did that today.”
