With 17 seconds left in the first half, West Islip’s Ava Obloj readied herself for a draw control. She had won the last two, with each leading to a goal.

Sure enough, West Islip’s girls lacrosse team ended up with the ball again as Kayley Obloj — Ava’s younger cousin — ran down the right wing. She flipped a pass across the cage where Ava Obloj received it in stride and buried it with a fantastic behind-the-back finish with six seconds remaining.

“I was too far past the goal to get a good shot off, so I just kind of shot it behind my back and hoped for the best,” Ava Obloj said. “I practice it all the time, so it comes naturally to me.”

A spectacular goal from a spectacular player, Ava Obloj led West Islip to a 13-11 road win over Smithtown West Wednesday in Suffolk’s Division II. She had four goals and two assists alongside sisters Jenna (two goals, assist), Carly (goal, assist) and cousin Kayley (goal, assist).

“It’s so fun, we grew up playing lacrosse together in the backyard,” Ava Obloj said. “The chemistry is so strong, I’m always looking for one of them. Everywhere I look, there’s a sister or a cousin.”

The win gives West Islip (11-1) control of the top seed in Suffolk’s Class B and the ability to clinch it down the stretch.

“This is a huge rival for us,” West Islip coach Joe Nicolosi said. “We played them in the county championships a few times, so it’s a huge win for us.”

Ava Obloj, Kayley Obloj and Mia Nicolosi combined to score four goals inside the final 3:20 of the half — including three in the final 30 seconds — to give West Islip an 8-3 halftime lead. Carly Obloj’s free-position goal with seven seconds left in the third quarter gave the Lions an 11-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Smithtown West (6-3) rallied with five consecutive goals in the final 3:19, cutting the lead to two, before time ran out. Ashley and Kaitlyn Mennella had four points apiece.

“I wish we had that fight from the first whistle,” Smithtown West coach Vincenza Patrona said. “But it shows that they’re going to play to the final whistle, that they can fight back in tough games. Hopefully, we take this as a learning experience and carry it into the postseason.”
