Three straight matchups in which they gave away the lead. Two consecutive county title losses. But on Friday night, Carle Place finally got the best of Cold Spring Harbor.

Sophomore Daniella Correia had a goal and an assist to lead No. 2 Carle Place over top-seeded Cold Spring Harbor, 2-1, for the Nassau Class B girls soccer championship at Farmingdale State College.

“We met them in the county final and we lost twice, and now we came back this year, and it’s amazing,” Correia said. “It’s the best moment of my year.”

This is the Frogs’ first county title since 2021. Carle Place will face Babylon in the Long Island Class B championship in a state subregional contest at 6 p.m. Monday at the same venue.

“Believe — that’s our motto. We’re yelling from the bench, ‘Believe, believe, believe,’” Carle Place coach Steve Cadet said. “We expected it to be close again and we closed it out this time.”

Carle Place uses a two-goalkeeper system. Emma Barros started and made four saves in the first half before Brooke Holsgrove took over for the second half.

With a one-goal lead and just less than three minutes remaining, a Cold Spring Harbor shot hit the post. Holsgrove caught the rebound to preserve the advantage.

“When the ball hit the post, I was like, what’s going to happen?” Holsgrove recalled thinking. “Once I caught it, I knew the game was set. Just wanted to win so bad, and I’m so proud of my team.”

Correia found Julianna Lugris, who chipped it over the goalkeeper and into the net to give Carle Place a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute.

Lugris nearly had her second goal in the 31st minute, but Seahawks goalkeeper Charlotte Madigan made an incredible save to keep the deficit at one. She finished with 15 saves.

“Charlotte had such a great career. She’s been our safety blanket for four years now,” Cold Spring Harbor coach Ryan Towers said. “We’re going to miss her.”

Eleven minutes into the second half, the same duo struck for Carle Place. Lugris was the feeder this time, finding Correia, who shot while sliding. The ball hit the left post before crossing the goal line near the right post.

Four minutes later, Cold Spring Harbor sophomore Alexandra Rossen met a crossing pass in the air and directed the ball into the net with her shoulder to cut the deficit to one.

But Carle Place continued applying pressure, keeping the ball in Cold Spring Harbor’s end of the field. The sideline started jumping up and down, and the celebration was on as the clock hit zero.

“I told the girls this is something you’re going to take for the rest of your life,” Cadet said. “And for me, as a coach, to give them that experience means everything.”
