Two weeks ago, Oceanside couldn’t find the net against Massapequa. But in the county final, the Sailors needed less than two minutes.

Victoria Maloney’s early goal set the tone as No. 1 Oceanside defeated No. 3 Massapequa, 3-0, to capture its third straight Nassau Class AAA girls soccer championship on Thursday night at Farmingdale State College.

The Sailors will face Suffolk champion Sachem East for the Long Island Class AAA championship at 4 p.m. Sunday at the same venue.

“To score in the first two minutes was game-changing,” Maloney said. “I was so happy I got the goal and I felt like it gave everyone more confidence.”

Isabella Mannino set up Maloney’s goal, and in the 27th minute, Maloney returned the favor.  She delivered a long cross-field pass to Mannino, who struck the ball into the net for a 2-0 advantage.

“We’re really close. We’ve been friends for like three years, even though she’s a sophomore and I’m a senior,” Mannino said. “We always pump each other up. It’s just meaningful that we got the first two goals, especially in the county championship. It was just amazing.”

Oceanside (14-2-1) consistently won the 50-50 balls throughout the game, something coach Danielle Chiera identified as the difference.

“Massapequa dominated the 50-50s, and it worked out for them,” Chiera said of the previous meeting. “That was a big key for us today. And we knew that with the 50-50s would come the possession, with the possession comes the shots on goal.”

Massapequa (10-4-5) attempted to generate opportunities on the Sailors’ side of the field but kept running into Madeline McMurray. Nothing was getting by her. The senior defender and four-year varsity player repeatedly shut down Massapequa opportunities.

“The mindset is just ‘out’ every single time,” McMurray said. “That’s honestly what I tell myself, and I scream it really loud. Out every single time, just keeping everything forward.”

Massapequa goalkeeper Haley D’Oria opened the second half with two enormous stops, including a save on the doorstep, to keep it a 2-0 game. She made another stop, but Leah Auletti scored off her own rebound to extend the lead to 3-0 midway through the second half.

McMurray, Julia Blette, Ella Hickey, Addison Goldstein and goalkeeper Ella Murray lead the Sailors on the back end. This unit hasn’t given up a goal in the postseason, as Oceanside has outscored its playoff opponents 14-0.

Oceanside now looks to claim its second straight Long Island title.

“Everybody is so close. Everybody does it for each other,” McMurray said. “I am so excited for the Long Island championship game.”
