Great Neck District's star golfers, like Lia Huang and Caylin Wong, have delivered for the past six years.
The senior duo did so again, but it was the depth of Great Neck District that helped the Nassau powerhouse cruise to another Long Island championship.
Great Neck District captured its sixth consecutive girls Long Island title with a 415-493 victory over Southampton/Pierson at Pine Hills Golf and Country Club in Manorville on Tuesday.
“When you have leaders like Caylin and Lia, the girls want to play for each other,” Great Neck coach Matt Corrigan said. “They have developed a culture of winning. We’ve done very well and I’m just blessed to have good golfers come my way.”
Huang and Wong set the tone in the first group. Both have won individual county championships during their careers and continued to shine on the big stage in their final Long Island title appearance.
Huang shot 10-over-par 83 and credited her teammates for delivering a great performance.
“Each individual player on our team has a lot to bring,” Huang said. “Because of that, we’re able to produce these wins and have these scores. Everyone works hard and it’s paid off.”
Wong shot 5-over-par 78 and took it all in as she went to battle with her teammate one final time in Great Neck colors on Long Island.
“It’s bittersweet,” Wong said. “We’ve won our sixth one, but it’s one of the last times Lia and I are playing together. It’s so nice to finish off this win streak with her by my side.”
Southampton sophomore Ellie Poremba shot 2-over-par 75, the best score of the day.
“Ellie’s hard work, dedication and determination on the golf course carries over to her everyday life,” Southampton/Pierson coach Edgar Franklin said. “The results show it. She puts the time in and she is a leader and makes our team better. The list of things goes on and on about how great she is.”
Poremba, the two-time Suffolk individual champion, kept the first group close until the separation began in the later groups.
Great Neck’s Lele Liu and Cherry Wang made the difference. Liu shot 6-over-par 79 and Wang finished 7-over-par 80 as Great Neck’s six-stroke lead after the first group turned into a 48-stroke advantage after the second group.
“The depth in our 3 and 4 spots is tremendous,” Corrigan said. “The ball-striking ability was great today. They are both tournament-tested players and they would be the 1 and 2 on most teams around.”
Both teams will compete in the state tournament June 6-7 at Wild Wood Country Club in Rush, New York.
