In big games, starting fast is always important. Connetquot/Sayville/BBP delivered its best opening period of the season in a crucial contest.

A six-goal opening period boosted Connetquot/Sayville/BBP to a commanding 8-1 victory over Middle Country at The Rinx in Hauppauge on Monday night.

The win secured the seventh seed for Connetquot/Sayville/BBP heading into the Suffolk County playoffs, according to coach Steve Beisel.

“The goal was to get out to a fast start, and we did,” Beisel said. “We gave up a goal early, but we answered right back. We have these types of spurts in us, and tonight everyone contributed. It was great.”

Logan Booth Alam sliced through the Middle Country defense consistently. He produced two goals and two assists in the first period alone.

“It was a full team effort,” said Booth Alam, who finished with five points. “It’s easy to get assists when I have teammates like this. They always find ways to get open, and I’ll find them easily.”

Middle Country opened the scoring when Matthew Marturiello rifled a shot into the back of the net just 36 seconds into the game.

After that, it was all Connetquot/Sayville/BBP.

Bennet King passed the puck to Booth Alam, who controlled it off his skates. He made a move past a defender and deked out the goalie for a forehand finish to tie the game at 1 with 13:58 left in the first period.

“I knew we needed to get one back,” Booth Alam said. “We knew this was a big game, and it was important to get that goal and win this game to lock up the playoffs.”

Joseph Villani then went end-to-end for a goal to give Connetquot/Sayville/BBP a 2-1 lead with 11:20 left in the first period. Two minutes later, Booth Alam found Bennett King in front of the net for another goal.

Richard Ogburn added a goal as Connetquot/Sayville/BBP scored four times in a five-minute span, building a 6-1 lead after the first period.

“We have a great group of guys here,” Villani said. “It’s my third year on varsity, and this group really deserves it.”

Middle Country was without its points leader, Declan Munkwitz, and coach Ryan Munkwitz. The team sits in eighth place and is focused on securing the final seed in the eight-team Suffolk County playoffs.

“We didn’t play our best tonight,” assistant coach Ray Carmen said. “We know what we did wrong. It’s time to regroup and come back here and play our hardest next game.”
