Whether Alyssa Tinucci led off an inning or stepped to the plate with runners on, she found a way to make things happen for MacArthur as it scored its most runs in a conference game this season.

Tinucci had three hits and two RBIs as MacArthur defeated visiting Glen Cove, 12-6, in Nassau I softball on Saturday.

Tinucci singled and scored on a passed ball to tie it at 1 in the first. The sophomore doubled in the second inning, but Alyssa Weigand took the throw from leftfielder Abby Lupinski and fired the ball home to get the runner at the plate, ending the inning for Glen Cove.

“With no one on, I’m just looking to make hard contact and get on base,” Tinucci said. “With runners in scoring position, I have a job to do. I pick out a spot on the field I want to go to and focus on watching the ball and connecting my bat.”

Natalie Weigand doubled to drive in two runs in the third and an error brought in another run to give Glen Cove a 4-1 lead.

MacArthur put up seven runs in the third, starting with back-to-back two-run singles from Anabelle Maria and Danielle Giordano to put the Generals ahead 5-4. Three more runs would score on errors, giving MacArthur an 8-4 advantage.

“We’re just looking for any way to get on,” Giordano said. “We’re not looking for the big home run. We want to get runners in and do the little things to keep momentum rolling.”

Michaela Hendricksen drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and Tinucci singled home two runs to increase MacArthur’s lead to 11-6. Ashley Powers delivered an RBI double in the sixth as the Generals extended their lead to 12-6.

“I was confident in myself and in my teammates to pull out this win,” Tinucci said. “We’ve all developed the mindset that we’re going to be successful and when you really believe that, the results follow.”

Alyssa Weigand and Brooke Simmons each had three hits for Glen Cove. Weigand led off the game with a home run and hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Simmons hit three doubles.

MacArthur (5-6) has now split the season series with Glen Cove (2-7) after the Big Red took the season’s first meeting, 8-3. The two met in last year’s Class AA county final series which Glen Cove won.

“We just want to keep getting better. We have a lot of young players that are getting acclimated to this level,” MacArthur coach Bobby Fehrenbach said. “The only way to have that happen is to go through game action and I think they’re doing a good job so far.”
