The Seaford softball team was afforded an opportunity to keep its season going with an at-large bid into the state tournament, but the Vikings struggled to find the offense to keep their season alive any longer.

Maine-Endwell defeated Seaford, 1-0, in the state Class A regional semifinal at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton Tuesday.

Tessa L’Amoreaux walked to load the bases for Maine-Endwell (16-5) in the bottom of the seventh. Later in the frame, Kaylee Hurba hit a two-out, walk-off single down the rightfield line to send Maine-Endwell to the regional final.

“We were grateful for this opportunity and cherished the moment,” Seaford coach Joseph Nastasi said. “Your time as an athlete competing in meaningful games can go quickly. So, we appreciated this.”

Rylie Betz struck out the side in the first for Seaford. The sophomore went on to strike out 16 and allowed four hits.

“Rylie handled some big moments today and you can see she develops an understanding of how to get hitters out as the game progresses,” Nastasi said. “This year, she improved her ability to handle challenging situations.”

Seaford’s Madelyn Burgess led off the sixth with a single, the Vikings’ only hit. Burgess stole second and advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Back-to-back groundouts to a drawn-in infield kept Seaford (13-11) off the scoreboard.

Hurba doubled to lead off the sixth, but Betz struck out three straight to end the threat.

Seaford lost to Wantagh in the decisive third game of the Nassau Class A championship, sending the Vikings on the at-large route for the state tournament.

“Although we have a young team, these girls know what it means to work hard for something you want,” Nastasi said. “Only one team gets to win the last game of the year and our goal every year is to try to be that team.”
