It felt like forever since Sacred Heart senior Maeve Going raced competitively.

One of the greatest runners in the history of the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA returned to action in the league’s track and field championship meet at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington on Saturday. She had not run in a real race since Oct. 26, but she traded in her rust for a gold medal, winning the 3,000-meter title in 10 minutes, 18.74 seconds.

After a historic start to her cross country season this past fall, Going had to shut it down right before the CHSAA Intersectional championships because of a stress reaction in a leg. That was a devastating blow, as it prevented her from being able to compete for the CHSAA individual title and took away her practically guaranteed qualification for the state Federation meet.

Given her previous success at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls — the Federation championship’s host site — she had a realistic shot to clinch a berth in the Nike Cross Nationals.

Going had lots of time to think about the opportunities stripped from her. However, all that matters to her now is that she’s back.

“This is a little bit jarring, because every day, I’ve been in the gym doing cross training, but this was very much more real,” Going said. “I think this makes me want to focus more on my goals and competing. The past couple of weeks, I’ve been really missing racing, so this was a nice start.”

Her teammates helped make her return even more special, as juniors Elle Riches and Natalia Taylor both won a pair of individual championships.

Riches successfully defended her NSCHSAA title in the 1,000 in 3:04.89 and won her first league title in the 1,500 in 5:01 flat. She was named the Track MVP of the meet. Taylor threw 33 feet, 10 1⁄2 inches to win the shot put and 48-11 to take the weight throw.

She was named Field MVP.

St. Anthony’s joined the double-champion party via senior Kaitlyn Korzonkiewicz and junior Gianna Bowman.

Korzonkiewicz dominated the 55 hurdles in 8.59 seconds to secure her first win and later flew 16-1 1⁄2 to take the long jump.

Bowman won the first league title of her high school career when she sprinted a 7.49 in the 55 before completing the successful double with a 40.93 in the 300.

“Last year, we had some great seniors ahead of me, so I wanted to take their spots,” Bowman said. “It feels really good to be a big contributor for my team. I love these girls.”

Bowman and Korzonkiewicz accounted for 24 of the Friars’ 137 points to defend their NSCHSAA team title.
