Fire Island hotels see early booking trend this season

Fire Island hotels are booking earlier than usual this season, and travelers hoping to secure a stay should act fast.
Trips to the barrier island typically come with a degree of spontaneity, with visitors watching the forecast and booking around sunny weekends. While that last-minute rhythm still exists, particularly at the start of the season, hotel operators say a noticeable shift is underway, with peak summer dates filling up well before Memorial Day.
“At this time, we still have availability for Memorial Day weekend, which is standard for this period, as guests tend to wait for more reliable weather forecasts before reserving their stay,” said Carleen Bonocore, co-owner of The Palms Hotel Fire Island in Ocean Beach. “What is especially noteworthy this year is the high volume of early bookings for the July Fourth holiday.”
In previous years, Bonocore said, Fourth of July reservations typically filled later in the spring or early summer. This season, many rooms and suites across the island are already reserved.
"This unexpected trend suggests that guests are planning their summer vacations earlier, possibly to secure their preferred accommodations or to secure a spot during this popular holiday period," Bonocore said.
Short term stays in high demand
A similar pattern is emerging in Fire Island Pines, where a mix of full-home rentals, weekly stays and a limited number of hotel-style accommodations creates a competitive market.
“We’re already seeing strong booking activity way ahead of Memorial Day,” said Michele Hamparian, of Pines Point, now in its third season. “People aren’t waiting for Memorial Day to start thinking about the Pines. They’re already making plans around it.”
Some high-demand periods are already spoken for. Pines Point is fully booked for Fourth of July and the week of Juneteenth. Portions of August are no longer available and Labor Day weekend is already about 75% booked. Operators say weekly bookings and shorter, more flexible stays have become increasingly common.

"There’s been a shift over the past few years. While traditional quarter shares aren’t as dominant as they once were, weekly stays are still incredibly strong, especially through direct bookings and the brokers on the island," Hamparian said.
That flexibility, paired with limited inventory, can drive competition for peak dates. For travelers, that shift changes how and when to book. Waiting until early summer to plan trips during holiday weekends and peak summer stretches, especially around Fourth of July and August, may mean limited options or higher prices.
Tips for securing your stay
At the same time, early-season travel still offers some flexibility. Memorial Day weekend bookings often hinge on the weather, and availability can remain open until closer to the date. A strong forecast can quickly change that, with rooms filling up in a matter of days.
There are still ways to find openings. Midweek stays tend to be easier to secure than weekends, and late June dates outside of holiday periods may offer more availability. For groups, quarter shares or home rentals can still provide a more affordable alternative to weekly rentals, with some savings compared to booking shorter, flexible stays.
For those looking to book now, a few properties still have limited availability heading into the early part of the season. Most hotels open for the season on May 15, marking the first weekend of pre-Memorial Day stays.
