Made Fresh Salads, of Bay Shore, recalls cream cheeses, deli-style foods over listeria concerns

A Long Island food company is recalling cream cheeses and deli-style salads due to potential listeria contamination.

Made Fresh Salads Inc., of Bay Shore, is recalling all its Ready to Eat Deli Style Salads and cream cheese flavors after areas of its facility tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, the Food and Drug Administration announced on its website on Sunday.

When ingested, listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

Listeria infections also can cause miscarriages, the FDA said.

Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

"Consumers who have purchased Made Fresh Salads are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund," the website said.

The salads were distributed in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and potentially elsewhere in New York City.

Affected products are in 5-pound and 30-pound white plastic tubs with a Made Fresh Salads or Northside label or half size aluminum pans.

"The products may have been repacked by retail locations in deli-style or other retail packaging," the website said. "Retail packaging and coding will vary based on location of purchase."

Made Fresh Salads has ceased production and distribution of the products as the FDA and the company continue their investigation into the matter,  the website said.

The salads being recalled have expiration dates from Sept. 3 through Sept. 18 printed on the bottom left of the label and include bean, vegetable and fish salads along with scallion, garlic and other flavored cream cheese.
