Mount Sinai Health to open new $20 million ambulatory surgical center in Carle Place

Mount Sinai Health System is set to open a new $20 million ambulatory surgical center offering orthopedic, plastic and spinal surgery in Carle Place, the health system announced. 

Manhattan-based Mount Sinai, which has one hospital on Long Island in Oceanside, said Tuesday the 20,400-square-foot Peakpoint Central Nassau Surgery Center at 371 Old Country Rd., will handle routine and complex procedures across a wide variety of specialty areas.

The center is tentatively scheduled to open on Sept.19, though final approvals from the state Department of Health are needed, said Ken Long, senior vice president of network operations for Mount Sinai.

"The facility is state of the art," said Long, adding the new site will act as a hub for the health system's surrounding 25 doctors offices. The center will help "knit Long Island together to be more efficient for patients.” 

The center, a joint venture between the health system, in-network physician investors and Ridgefield, Connecticut-based Merritt Healthcare, will feature two operating rooms, two procedure rooms and 17 recovery bays, among them three private and three 23-hour stay rooms, the health system said.

The health system last year opened a 63,000-square-foot, multi-specialty care center in Wantagh, Long added. 

“With Mount Sinai care hubs now located in Wantagh and Greenlawn, this centrally located ambulatory surgery center helps connect existing facilities while expanding access for patients across Long Island,” said Dr. Michael Gorin, medical director of Peakpoint Central Nassau.

Gorin said the facility will help bring Mount Sinai’s surgical expertise on Long Island under one roof.

Founded in 2001, Merritt Healthcare works with physicians and health systems to develop and manage ambulatory surgical centers across the country, according to the company's website. The company maintains partnerships with more than 500 doctors and has created 24 facilities since its founding. 

Additional surgical practice areas at Peakpoint will include gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pain management, podiatry and urology, the health system said. 

Growth through ambulatory sites like the new surgery center have become the norm among major health systems, said Wendy Darwell, president and CEO of the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State, which represents hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley.

“More and more care is now being delivered in the outpatient setting and can safely be done that way,” Darwell said. “Bringing services close to communities is a real imperative in health care policy right now, but it also makes business sense.”
