ShopRite has grown in Bethpage.

The supermarket  has expanded after taking over an adjacent space vacated by Costello’s Ace Hardware in 2024, according to an email from Seth Greenfield, of Food Parade Inc., the family-run Plainview company that operates the supermarket and five other ShopRites on Long Island.

Located at 3901 Hempstead Tpke., the Bethpage ShopRite opened in February 2016 in a former Pathmark supermarket space.

With the additional space, which opened to customers last week, the ShopRite store grew from 57,000 to 74,000 square feet, a nearly 30% increase.

The pre-existing ShopRite space is undergoing a renovation that will be finished in November, but remains open to customers during the project, Greenfield said.

After the renovations are complete, the store will have online ordering for pick-up and delivery service, wider aisles, updated decor and expanded offerings in every department, particularly prepared foods, he said in the email.

Currently, the store has 13 checkout lanes with eight self-checkout stations. After the renovation and expansion are done, the store will have 20 checkout lanes with cashiers and 10 self-checkout stations, he said.

The store employs 232 workers, and more will be hired when the renovation is complete, Greenfield said.

He declined to disclose the cost of the project. "We are making a significant investment with this expansion and renovation that we believe is important for the store," he said.

The Bethpage supermarket was expanded because it outgrew its space, Greenfield said.

The ShopRite brand is owned by Wakefern Food Corp., a Keasbey, New Jersey-based cooperative with 45 member companies that independently own and operate more than 380 supermarkets in nine Northeast states.
