Levittown Staples to close Aug. 28, making way for new Sprouts Farmers Market location

The Staples office supply store in Levittown is scheduled to close at the end of next month to make way for a new Sprouts Farmers Market, according to staff at the store.

The office supply retailer, located at 2981-2991 Hempstead Tpke., will officially close its doors on Aug. 28, and will be offering discounts on many store items in the lead-up to its final day in business, store supervisors there said.

“From what we’ve been told, it’s because there are two other stores that have closed next to us,” said Ryan Hussey, a store supervisor at the Staples who has worked there for six years.

Officials with Staples did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Wren Kitchens location that had been next to the Staples closed earlier this year. The United Kingdom-based designer and manufacturer of kitchen cabinets abruptly closed all of its stores nationwide, including its 11 Long Island stores, in April as part of a bankruptcy filing.

Hussey said the Levittown Staples plans to begin offering discounts of 30% on most store items in about two weeks. Items like ink and higher ticket items would likely not be subject to the discounts, he said.

“As someone who lives in Levittown, it’s sad to see,” said Hussey, who said impacted employees are being given the chance to be transferred to other stores or take severance payments.

Arizona-based Sprouts Farmers Market, a chain of natural and organic food grocery stores, entered the New York State market earlier this year when it opened its first location in Long Beach.

The Levittown site will be about 25,000 square feet when it's completed, the company said.

"Sprouts selected Levittown as part of our continued growth across New York and the Northeast, where we’ve seen strong enthusiasm for our fresh, healthy products and unique specialty offerings," a company spokesperson said in an email.

Its Levittown store and a Smithtown store at a former The Fresh Market location, at 126 E. Main St., are both scheduled to open next year, a company spokeswoman told Newsday.
