The first standalone Theodore Alexander store in the nearly 30-year history of the luxury home furnishings brand has opened on Long Island.

The Theodore Alexander Design Center opened Sept. 11 in Manhasset, at 2103 Northern Blvd., where a grand opening event is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16. The store occupies a two-level, 41,393-square-foot space that Bed Bath & Beyond vacated in 2021.

Theodore Alexander is a manufacturer of high-end furniture and decor that sells wholesale to 7,000 retailers and designer trade customers. But the Manhasset location is a retail store, independently owned by a private investor, under the Theodore Alexander name.

“This significant milestone has been made possible through the support of a private investor who recognizes the exceptional potential of Theodore Alexander to resonate with discerning luxury consumers in the Manhasset market,” the company's president, Ed Teplitz, said in a statement.

The Manhasset store is not a franchise, he said in emailed comments provided by a company representative to Newsday on Monday. He declined to name the private investor or to disclose what the investment arrangement entails.

The Manhasset store “presented itself as a unique opportunity that falls outside the binary models,” he said in the email.

The store will employ 12 to 15 people, he said.

While the Manhasset store welcomes retail customers, it also is open to interior designers who “will have access to trade pricing, the full fabric library, and digital product catalog with a significant array of designs showcased on the floor,” Theodore Alexander said.

The new store is in leased space above a Whole Foods Market in a building in Munsey Park Plaza, whose buildings are owned by Kimco Realty Corp., a real estate investment trust based in Jericho.

Across the street from Theodore Alexander, along Northern Boulevard, is the high-end Americana Manhasset shopping center, where another luxury home furnishings retailer, RH, opened a store last month.

Theodore Alexander’s products include living room, bedroom and office furniture, as well as lighting and decor.

On Long Island, some of the stores selling Theodore Alexander brand home furnishings are Benjamin Rugs & Furniture in Farmingdale, France and Son in Garden City and Brass & Burl in East Hampton, according to the manufacturer’s website.

A London-based antiques dealer, Paul Maitland Smith, founded Theodore Alexander in 1996 in Vietnam, which is where the global headquarters are located. The company’s furniture manufacturing takes place in Vietnam and at its U.S. headquarters, in Trinity, North Carolina.

Smith died in 2016.
