Howard Stern's Sirius show coming to HBO Max

In a surprise media departure for someone who's had a few of those over the last several decades — as the once self-proclaimed "king of all media," after all — Howard Stern's SiriusXM show will be turned into a weekly program streaming on HBO Max, starting Sept. 17.

Both SiriusXM and HBO Max — which announced the news simultaneously Monday morning — described the new show as "weekly filmed episodes" of "The Howard Stern Show." As previously reported, Stern's radio show will be cut back to one live episode per week starting next month.

In a statement, Stern, 72, who grew up in Roosevelt and Rockville Centre, said in part: "For years, my SiriusXM show has offered only brief video peeks. HBO convinced me to pull back the curtain and let the world watch; the amazing celebrities and musicians who drop by, our staff antics and my conversations with Robin [Quivers]. Bringing my latest SiriusXM shows to HBO Max’s millions of viewers, every week, is a career highlight, and I’m thrilled to be joining the ranks of such prestigious television."

HBO and HBO Max Content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys said: "Howard Stern has always been in a category of his own with an unmistakable, unique take on the world. Howard has changed radio and media at large with his ability to draw the most out of his guests and cultivate a following like no other. We couldn’t be happier to welcome Howard to HBO Max and to partner with SiriusXM to bring 'The Howard Stern Show' to the platform."

Incidentally, this is hardly the first TV venture for Stern. There have been a number of those over the years, including an E! show that simulcast parts of the hugely popular terrestrial show that aired on WXRK/92.3 FM in the 1990s, then later, a cable video-on-demand service.

From 1998 to 2001, "The Howard Stern Radio Show" — think highlights from the real radio show — aired on some CBS stations late Saturday nights. Not counting pay-per-view or home video, Stern's first regularly scheduled TV show aired on WWOR/9 back in 1990. Amusingly, Stern was prohibited from cross-promoting the show on radio, and referred to it as "Project X." It was dropped a couple years later.

This new HBO project could be a departure from previous efforts. While it's unclear what those "brief video peeks" will entail, the HBO Max program will be based on the single live weekly show airing Mondays, the TV version streaming Thursdays at 3:01 a.m. That suggests extensive outtakes from the featured interview, which would be unusual for a Stern TV show.

But as streaming TV grows, radio continues to scale back. For years Stern broadcast three live shows a week, then two. Soon, he will be down to one. Starting Tuesday, Andy Cohen's "Radio Andy" will move from Channel 102 to 101 — or so-called "Howard 101," the space long devoted to archival shows. (Sebastian Maniscalco's "Comedy Radio" moves to 102.) When Howard 101 goes away, Howard 100 — the flagship channel, which will continue to air the live three-hour radio show — will absorb the archive.

In addition, "The Wrap Up Show" — hosted by Gary Dell'Abate and Jon Hein, which airs Wednesday — will also move to Channel 100.
