Mister Softee opening storefront in Oakdale

Selo Artas remembers not being able to afford a Mister Softee ice cream cone. He had recently moved to New York from his native Turkey and was paying for school. Now, almost 11 years later, he’s opening a Mister Softee brick-and-mortar in Oakdale on July 1.
"I was 25 that day and when I [saw] I can’t afford it I was feeling really bad, but I told myself, 'OK, one day, I’ll eat this, I swear.' " he said.
The Oakdale storefront, at 4538 Sunrise Hwy., will be the fourth Long Island brick-and-mortar for the popular ice cream truck vendor. There are also Mister Softee stores in East Islip, Center Moriches and Miller Place.
The 1,700-square foot site used to house Matted Memories Frame & Gift Shop. Offerings will include the classic vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and pistachio soft serve, along with more than 24 handmade hard ice cream flavors, Artas said. Hard flavors include chocolate brownie, salted caramel and cookie dough.
Artas has operated Mister Softee trucks in the Oakdale, Bayport and Sayville area for the past five years. On the store’s opening day, Artas plans to bring up to 20 Mister Softee trucks to take over the Oakdale shopping center to celebrate.
