Riverhead is losing an important independently owned coffee shop this week.
The popular Mugs on Main coffee shop announced it will be closing on Wednesday in an Instagram post published last week. The post had 402 like with more than 70 comments on Monday.
"We’ve been plagued with ongoing facility issues and flooding since opening our doors and we can’t afford to continue to fix the problems," the post reads. "We will miss the community of our regular customers of being past of your daily lives, and you being a part of ours."
The post confirms the coffee shop's second location, Mugs at Schmidt’s, Schmidt's Country Market at 164 Jessup Ave., in Quogue, will remain open.
Owners, husband-and-wife duo Jeff Schaeffer and Kasandra Watkins-Schaeffer did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Mugs on Main opened on Main Street in 2023 serving foods such as soups and its broken bacon, egg and cheese, a deconstructed version of the favorite breakfast sandwich served in a mug. They opened their Quogue location this summer. The space is tucked in 13-by-13-foot nook at the front of Schmidt's Country Market.
During its time on Riverhead’s Main Street, it has become a "cherished part of Downtown Riverhead," Riverhead BID management association’s executive director, Melissa Martin said in a statement to Newsday.
"More than just a coffee shop, it served as a welcoming gathering place where people could connect, work, meet friends, and enjoy the unique character of our downtown," Martin said. "We are saddened to see them close their doors and recognize that small businesses face many challenges in today's economic environment. We remain hopeful that a new cafe will emerge to fill this space and carry forward the warm, inviting atmosphere that made Mugs on Main such a beloved destination."
Mugs on Main, 33 E. Main St., Riverhead, 631-381-0494, mugsonmain.com. Open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until Oct. 14.
