Late-night fire closes Son's Liquor & Wines in Hempstead

A Hempstead liquor store is closed after a fire broke out in its two-story building on Wednesday night, the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office said.

The Hempstead Fire Department was alerted to a call for a fire at Son’s Liquor & Wines, located at 424 Clinton St., shortly before 11 p.m.

The building has apartments on the second floor and three businesses on the first floor, including the liquor store, where the fire originated, Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Andrew Schmitt said in a news release.

About 75 firefighters from the Hempstead, Uniondale, South Hempstead, West Hempstead, Garden City, Rockville Centre and Freeport fire departments contained the blaze to the liquor store and brought it under control within 30 minutes.

Son’s Liquor & Wines will be closed due to the fire and smoke damage, officials said.

No injuries were reported and no other occupants of the building were affected. The residents of the apartments were allowed to return to their homes after the fire was extinguished, Schmitt said.

Fire officials could not immediately confirm how many people lived in the apartments.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
