BACKGROUND

• Sanders, 57, of Greenport, a registered Republican, is seeking his third term as assessor. He is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. He also was a Southold trustee.
• He is a lieutenant colonel in the New York Army National Guard and was deployed to Kuwait in May, his fourth deployment. He was a corporal in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1991 to 1998 and has been a member of the New York Army National Guard since 2008. 
• Sanders is a licensed associate real estate broker and a former post commander with Southold American Legion Post 803. 

ISSUES

• Sanders is expected back from deployment in January, according to Peter Ganley, Southold GOP chairman, and is on a leave of absence from his assessor position. He is unable to actively campaign while deployed, Ganley said.
