BACKGROUND

  • Poliwoda, 56, of Southold, is making his first bid for assessor. A registered Republican, he is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. He previously served as a trustee for two terms.
  • He has more than 20 years of experience in real estate and is an associate broker with Douglas Elliman Real Estate, where he specializes in property valuation and buyer/seller representation.
  • Poliwoda is a past president of the Southold Baymen’s Association, was a member of the town’s Shellfish Advisory Committee and was vice president of North Fork Little League.

ISSUES

  • As a third-generation town resident, Poliwoda said he knows the town and will bring his experience in assessments and valuations to the job. "I’m well qualified for the post and have been dealing with valuations for 20 years in real estate where I’m comfortable with defining the value of homes," he said.
  • He said he was familiar with the office through his work and "I plan to go in for training in the time after election [if elected]. I’m a quick learner."
  • Poliwoda said he doesn’t believe it’s feasible or doable, given the size of the staff, to reassess every property in town each year as there are too many staff hours involved.
