BACKGROUND

  • Schlachter, 64, of Southold, a registered Republican, is running on the Republican and Conservative lines in his first bid for elected office.
  • He has been a mechanic with the Southold Town Highway Department for 11 years and previously was fleet manager for a nursery, with 40 years’ experience as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic.
  • Schlachter has been a member of the Southold Fire Department for 48 years and is a member of Southold American Legion Post 803. He has been the "Southold Santa" for the PBA for 25 years.

ISSUES

  • Schlachter said he would focus on maintaining town roads and getting the best results for the money spent. He said he would work to stabilize roads before they start crumbling to extend their useful lifetime.
  • He would work to keep residents safe with regular tree trimming and make sure signs are visible. He said he would encourage a roundtable discussion among construction companies on the best and most financially feasible ways to approach problems.
  • Schlachter wants to include department employees in best-practices discussions. They’re on the front line, he said, and he wants to hear their ideas and learn about problems when residents complain to them.
