Storm causing hundreds of flight delays, cancellations at NY area airports

Flights to and from metropolitan area airports are seeing significant delays and cancellations Monday amid a state of emergency weather advisory.

Long Island is under a flood watch until early Tuesday morning as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affect the area, according to the National Weather Service. After the Fourth of July weekend, Monday was expected to be a heavy travel day, according to the Port Authority.

As of 11:30 a.m. Monday the flight tracking website FlightAware was reporting 178 delays and 78 cancellations at Kennedy Airport, 158 delays and 61 cancellations at Newark Airport, and 192 delays and 157 cancellations at LaGuardia Airport.

The three airports were seeing the worst delays and cancellations of all metropolitan areas in the United States Monday, according to FlightAware's Misery Map. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark were within the top six airports globally with the most delays and cancellations Monday.

Five flights scheduled for Tuesday at Kennedy were already delayed, with three canceled. There were no delays or cancellations for flights Tuesday reported for Newark or LaGuardia. 

Smaller Long Island airports saw fewer flights impacted by the storm, with one delay and zero cancellations at Long Island MacArthur Airport and no delays or cancellations reported at Republic Airport, according to FlightAware.

Significant rainfall was expected to continue through late Monday night, and a flash flood warning was issued for Nassau and Queens through Monday afternoon.
