Yankees' Austin Wells and Jasson Dominguez homer in win over Phillies; Cody Bellinger exits with injury

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Austin Wells and Jasson Dominguez homered and Ryan Weathers struck out seven in 5 2⁄3 innings as the Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1, on Saturday.

The Yankees (59-45), who have won five of their last six games, remained two games behind the AL East-leading Rays.

Cody Bellinger singled, doubled and had an RBI for the Yankees. He blooped a single that he stretched into a double in the eighth, but he pulled up going from first to second and exited with an apparent leg injury.

Bryce Harper drove in Philadelphia‘s run with a first-inning sacrifice fly. The Phillies are 2-6 on a nine-game homestand against the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees that concludes Sunday.

Weathers (4-7) rebounded from three consecutive poor outings, allowing one run, six hits and a walk. Weathers, Angel Chivilli and Paul Blackburn held the Phillies scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth before David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 20th save.

Bednar hasn’t been scored on since May 18 and has a 0.00 ERA and 0.55 WHIP (eight hits, five walks) with 24 strikeouts in 23 2⁄3 innings in that 20-game span. The Yankees are 17-3 in those games and 33-8 in games in which Bednar has pitched.

Wells tied the score at 1-1 with an opposite-field drive off Brian Keller in the third, and the Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with some help from the Phillies. With a runner on first and two outs, Paul Goldschmidt popped up to shallow leftfield. Edmundo Sosa, playing deep in left, could not get to the ball, so shortstop Trea Turner tried to make an over-the-head catch, but the ball bounced off his glove. Bellinger followed with an RBI single to center.

Dominguez, batting righthanded, homered off Jose Alvardo in the seventh.

The Phillies dropped to 14-33 in games in which Zack Wheeler, Jesus Luzardo or Cristopher Sanchez do not start.
