The Yankees honored John Sterling after the legendary broadcaster’s passing Monday at the age of 87 with a tribute video, a moment of silence and the initials JS embroidered on the back of their caps.
They’ll continue to pay their respects during the remainder of this season with a customized memorial patch on their uniform sleeves, featuring an old-school microphone above his name, which will debut Monday, May 18, in the homestand opener against the Blue Jays. Until then, the JS stitching will remain on the caps, through the Subway Series finale with the Mets at Citi Field on May 17.

Before Monday’s game, Sterling’s former radio partners, Michael Kay and Suzyn Waldman, laid bouquets on the plate during the moment of silence. The Bleacher Creatures included Sterling at the end of their daily roll call, and following the final out of the Yankees’ 12-1 victory over the Orioles, Sterling’s signature call -- “The Yankees win! Thuuuuuuuh Yankees win!” -- was played over the Stadium’s PA system.
Aaron Judge did his part, too, launching a first-inning homer that spurred Kay to deliver Sterling’s classic “It is high ... it is far ... it is gone! A Judge-ian blast!” as a tribute to his beloved friend and partner during the YES broadcast.
“I was just thinking of his call,” Judge said afterward. “That tribute hit home, because he loved the Yankees. He loved this team, he loved this franchise, he loved the fans, he loved everybody he talked to on a nightly basis.”
