Grading the Jets' Week 2 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers

OFFENSE

The Jets had an opportunity on offense to put the hammer down and win this game, but they didn’t. Their execution after an explosive Breece Hall catch-and-run and after a takeaway was poor. The offense had the ball inside the red zone after the defense forced a turnover and the Jets settled for a field goal. Overall, the run game was never established. The Jets rushed for only 67 yards on27 carries and failed to get some critical first downs in short-yardage situations. Geno Smith was under a lot of pressure, and especially as it wore on. He was sacked on back-to-back plays at the start of overtime, hurting any chance for a scoring drive. The Jets never really got their tight ends involved after they were such a big part of the offense last week.

GRADE: C-

DEFENSE

The defense was the Jets’ best unit on Sunday. They allowed just one touchdown on Green Bay’s first eight possessions. Six of them were three plays or fewer. The Jets forced four fumbles, but they recovered only one of them. The defense let up in the fourth quarter and overtime. They allowed 13 points over the last 12-plus minutes of game action. Penalties also killed the Jets when it mattered. Azareye’h Thomas was called for pass interference on a Green Bay fourth-quarter touchdown drive. In Green Bay’s game-winning series in overtime, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. showed no discipline when he hit Chris Brooks late, adding 15 yards to a 15-yard pass play. The Packers kicked a game-winning field goal two plays later.

GRADE: B-

SPECIAL TEAMS

Chris Banjo’s group usually is sharp. Not in this game. Isaiah Williams muffed two punts and was flagged for an invalid fair-catch penalty. The Jets were fortunate Qwan’tez Stiggers recovered both of Williams’ fumbles. But Stiggers was penalized for an illegal block in the back on a punt. Braiden McGregor was called for holding on a punt. Isaiah Davis was flagged for a holding on a kick return in the fourth quarter. The Jets allowed a whopping 208 return yards, including a 63-yard punt return by Skyy Moore that led to the game-tying field goal in regulation.

GRADE: F

COACHING

Aaron Glenn and his staff made some decisions that did not work. Glenn should have called timeout after forcing a fourth down with about a minute left in regulation and got the ball back. He let the clock run down instead and basically allowed Green Bay to run out the clock. Going for it on third-and-2 and fourth-and-1 near midfield and running both times when the run game wasn’t working were the wrong calls. Maybe have Smith roll out and pass it instead of being in shotgun and handing it off to Braelon Allen on fourth down 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage. The clock management at the end of the half continues to be an issue.
