Brody Riedel, Brody Juan power Long Beach football's red-hot offense past Bellmore JFK

Brody Riedel carried the football into the end zone behind the left side of the O-line. Gavin O’Grady booted the point-after try through the uprights, and the running clock was about to mercifully be sent into motion — with 2:37 left in the first half.

Long Beach had scored five touchdowns on five possessions and was up by 35.

The Marines cruised to a 35-6, Nassau II win over Bellmore JFK Saturday at Long Beach Middle School.

This served as an impressive bounce-back performance after their opening 34-26 loss at Carey.

“Since last week, we knew what we needed to do to get better,” said Riedel, their standout senior running back/linebacker. “… We were not losing this game. Before the game, we were like, ‘We must outscore them by at least 30 points.’ ”

Only missed by a point.

Senior quarterback Brody Juan went 9-for-11 for 147 yards and two TDs and Riedel carried 13 times for 88 yards and three scores.

Ryan Farrell also made a nifty catch in the end zone. And center Jack Muskin, guards Charles Muskin and Gavyn Vicente and tackles Vaughn Bogacki and Kellen de Bruin, plus tight end Joe Henn, stood out in the blocking department.

“Very happy about the offense,” coach Scott Martin said. “Defensively, they ran the ball on us a lot last week. So we were able to contain the run inside. We played very tough. And a lot of kids contributed.”

The Marines were seeded third in the conference behind No. 1 Garden City and No. 2 Carey after going 8-3 and falling in the final to Garden City.

Can they take the next step and claim first prize for the first time? That’s the goal.

“We have the talent to do it,” Martin said.

If they get Carey again in the postseason, Riedel is confident they can win.

The same if mighty Garden City is the opponent.

“I look at them as normal high school players,” Riedel said. “Just because of the name on their jersey, all the stuff that they’ve had and their success, doesn’t match what we have going on right now.”

Riedel capped the game’s first possession with a 1-yard touchdown run. Bellmore JFK made a mistake, letting the ensuing kickoff to keep bouncing. David Ruiz grabbed it for Long Beach — first-and-goal from the 3. Juan immediately hit Christian Capria for a TD.

“It definitely took the wind out,” Cougars coach Johnny McGuire said. “… But one play doesn’t make the whole game.”

Then came a 5-yard scoring run by Riedel, Juan’s 20-yard TD toss to Farrell and Riedel’s 2-yard scoring run.

“I try to push it on to all of my teammates every single day to become the best player they can be,” Juan said.

Ethan Reiner raced 73 yards to the end zone in the fourth for Bellmore JFK, highlighting his 106-yard rushing day.

The 1-1 Cougars, named as Nassau’s most improved team last season, were missing five injured starters.

“I told [my team] at halftime that this was very reminiscent of our New Hyde Park game last year,” McGuire said. “We were coming in confident against a solid team … and we got absolutely demolished, much like we did today. We brushed ourselves off and ended up in the playoffs. And that’s what we’re going to look to do starting on Tuesday.”
