Brody Riedel helps Long Beach football earn bounce-back victory

Brody Riedel carried the football into the end zone behind the left side of the O-line. Gavin O’Grady booted the point-after try through the uprights, and the running clock was about to mercifully be sent into motion — with 2:37 left in the first half.

Long Beach had scored five touchdowns on five possessions and was up by 35.

The Marines cruised to a 35-6, Nassau II win over Bellmore JFK Saturday at Long Beach Middle School.

This served as an impressive bounce-back performance after their opening 34-26 loss at Carey.

“Since last week, we knew what we needed to do to get better,” said Riedel, their standout senior running back/linebacker. “… We were not losing this game. Before the game, we were like, ‘We must outscore them by at least 30 points.’ ”

Only missed by a point.

Bay Shore celebrates 100 years of football history

He was lightning fast and could stick his foot in the ground and change direction as good as anyone in his day. Or anyone in any day for that matter.

It was 75 years ago that his teammates nicknamed Jimmy Jackson "The Rabbit" for his incredible breakaway speed and touchdown runs.

And there was the one they called "The Rabbit" on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon, making his way to midfield accompanied by 91-year-old Paul Boghosian, another Bay Shore football star, for the ceremonial pregame coin toss on Cliff LaPlatney Field in Bay Shore.

They were there to celebrate the 100th year of Bay Shore football.

The 92-year-old Jackson, moving a little slower than his days as the leading scorer in Suffolk in 1951, smiled throughout the ceremony. He scored 11 TDs as the Marauders finished 8-0 and won the Suffolk title his senior year.

“I’m loving every second of this,” Jackson said. “It’s a special moment in time and I’m soaking it all in. All these Bay Shore players coming back and reminiscing old times — there’s nothing better. I loved this community, the Leggio family, and my time in this field. It’s an honor to represent my school one more time.”

The day was made even more memorable when Jayden Herbert hauled in a diving catch in the corner of the end zone off a Caleb Leichtman pass for the two-point conversion and Bay Shore held on for an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Patchogue-Medford in Suffolk Division I to improve to 2-0.

Hills East's D-line leads way in Suffolk II football win over Huntington

Two games. Two shutouts.

The Half Hollow Hills East defense is legit.

The defensive line of Michai Crump, Tyler Jerrick and Carl Smith put together a masterful performance, limiting host Huntington to 88 total yards of offense in the RedHawks’ 31-0 win in Suffolk Division II football Saturday afternoon.

Crump had 14 tackles and two sacks, Smith had eight tackles and a sack and Jerrick added eight tackles.

Former Port Jeff football player Sam Fabian gets two sacks in win for Rocky Point

Sam Fabian unbuckled his light blue helmet and smiled from ear to ear. It lasted a while, and it might not go away all weekend.

The Port Jefferson student-athlete was unsure if he’d play football this season after his program canceled its varsity season due to a lack of players earlier this month. But, in his Rocky Point debut Saturday, he registered two sacks late in the fourth quarter to help put away a 35-14 victory over host Eastport-South Manor in Suffolk Division III. Three other former Port Jefferson players suited up, but didn’t see much time.

“It’s a dream come true, coming back to football,” Fabian said. “After two months of wondering if we were going to play, then coming back and making a difference for these guys, I was ecstatic.”

Hills East's Bryan out with injury

Half Hollow Hills East's star running back Jayden Bryan will miss Saturday's Suffolk II game at Huntington due to an undisclosed injury, coach Alex Marcelin said. It is unclear if the junior will miss additional time. Bryan ran for 200 yards and a touchdown in the RedHawks' 42-0 win over Lindenhurst in last week's opener. He totaled 1,400 yards and 18 TDs as a sophomore.

Suffolk scores: Commack upsets Bellport

Lincoln Riggs completed 14 of 17 passes for 166 yards and a 66-yard TD to Mason Ruocco to lead Commack to a 21-13 win over Bellport in Suffolk II Friday night. Logan LaCamera ran for two TDs, including one to put the Cougars up by eight points in the fourth quarter. Commack, the preseason No. 12 seed in Division II, improved to 2-0 with the win over the sixth-seeded Clippers. Bellport (0-2) defeated Commack, 47-7, last season.

Nassau scores: Calhoun wins 2OT thriller

Gianni Capizzi's fumble recovery sealed Calhoun's 25-19 win over Mepham after Joe Smith caught a go-ahead 30-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Fortin in double overtime for the Colts in Nassau II on Friday. Capizzi also returned a fumble 97 yards for a TD in the first quarter for Calhoun (1-1). Kellen Franquiz caught a TD pass from Adam Erlichman in the first OT period for Mepham (1-1).

Carle Place football puts up 50 points in victory over Lawrence

As far as offense goes, this was about as close to perfect as there is

Motivated by a season-opening loss, Carle Place earned a 50-38 win over Lawrence on its homecoming on Friday night in a Nassau Conference IV football game.

The Frogs’ offense took the field for eight total drives and scored on every single one of them, with seven of those possessions ending with touchdowns.

"We took a very tough loss last week, so we had to step up and show everyone else in the conference what we’re all about," senior quarterback Jack Ryan said. "Lawrence is a good team, I’m not going to lie, so I’m excited about this one.”

Last week, Lawrence (1-1) snapped a 28-game losing streak while fielding just 16 players. This week, they had 22, but couldn't make it back-to-back wins, not against an unstoppable Carle Place offense.

Ward Melville football rallies from 10 points down to beat Longwood

Chris Retzlaff will need an ice bath sometime this weekend.

The junior wrecking ball hammered the interior of a rugged Longwood defense all night. Over and over, Retzlaff charged into the Lions' front for short yardage to wear down that unit. When he wasn’t carrying the ball, he was leading the Patriots in tackles from the linebacking position.

“Chris Retzlaff played ironman football tonight,” Ward Melville coach Chris Boltrek said. “We had some key players out and we needed him to step in and play great football. He was a major factor on both sides of the ball.”

With Ward Melville playmaker Joe Karpowicz sidelined with an illness, Retzlaff stepped into the spotlight and helped deliver a big road win. Retzlaff scored two touchdowns and rushed for 63 yards on 19 carries as Ward Melville wiped out a 10-point, second-quarter deficit to come back for a 21-18 win over Longwood in a Suffolk Division I game before more than 4,000 fans in Middle Island. Ward Melville improved to 2-0.

Sachem North's Luke LaRocca has monster game in Suffolk I win over Floyd

Luke LaRocca has been a steady, solid quarterback the last two years.

Two games into his senior season in Suffolk Division I, LaRocca has emerged as one of the elite quarterbacks in the county.

LaRocca completed 13 of 15 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 85 yards and a score to lead Sachem North to a 35-13 win over visiting Floyd in the National Football Foundation’s Kickoff Classic on Friday night.

“He’s the only three-year starter at quarterback in Sachem North football history,” coach Dave Caputo said. “Each year, he’s taken a step. But the step from junior to senior year has far exceeded our expectations. He’s one of the top three players in Division I.”

Sachem North shuts out Floyd in second half, cruises to win

Luke LaRocca threw for 230 yards and 3 TDs and ran for 85 yards and a TD in a 35-13 win over host Floyd on Friday night. Lucas Bouchard caught 2 TD passes and ran for a score and Joe Gambardella had 3 TFLs and an interception.

Lawrence fights back against Carle Place

Lawrence refuses to go away. On 4th-and-19 from Carle Place’s 23, Khalil Brassell threads the needle for a touchdown strike to sophomore wide receiver Timothy Jimenez. He then fires a two-point pass to senior wideout Dajahn Harris. Carle Place leads 31-30 late in the third quarter.

Sachem North's Luke LaRocca having a big game vs. Floyd

Luke LaRocca found Gavin Nuzzi for a 21-yd TD pass on 3rd-and-11 with 3:13 left in the third quarter. LaRocca has three TD passes and a rushing score and Sachem North leads Floyd, 35-13.

Longwood and Ward Melville in close, low-scoring game

The Longwood football team has an outstanding offensive line and two incredibly talented halfbacks in Kyon Sarwari and Makai Jacobs.

Sarwari rushed nine times for 114 yards and Jacobs added 66 yards on three carries in the first half.

Quarterback Ryan Green found Gio Johnson for a 19-yard TD pass and Cameron Clemons added a 21-yard field goal as the Lions opened a 10-0 first quarter lead.

Ward Melville halfback Chris Retzlaff scored on a fourth down run for a TD and Ethan Jargo added the kick to make it 10-7 at the half. The Patriots drove 71 yards in nine plays, keyed by a 52-yard pass from quarterback Hudson Philbrick to Retzlaff.

Ward Melville vs. Longwood highlights key games in Week 2

Hudson Philbrick emerged as a top quarterback on Long Island last season. His He threw for 24 TDs and accounted for more than 2,500 total yards.

Philbrick led Ward Melville to the Suffolk Division I title and within a point of the Long Island Class I championship. The Patriots were beaten by Massapequa, the three-time defending champions, 13-12.

Now the senior leader is poised to make another run at the LIC. It won’t be easy – as getting through the gauntlet of top teams in Suffolk will stand in the Patriots way.

He opened the 2026 campaign in much the same he played in 2025. He passed for five first-half touchdowns and sat the second half in a 48-0 win over Brentwood.

“We were young last year and returned four of our starting five linemen," Ward Melville coach Chris Boltrek said. “We’re hitting on all cylinders. This is our first big test.”

Ward Melville (1-0) travels to play at Longwood (1-0) on Friday at 6 p.m.

New QB Fortin to get a taste of the Calhoun-Mepham rivalry

Junior quarterback Jacob Fortin returned to Calhoun and has already given the Colts a boost on offense. Now he gets his first home game, an in-district rivalry against Mepham tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Fortin, a 6-3, 200-pound transfer from St. Anthony’s, completed 11 of 16 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 71 yards and a score in Calhoun’s 24-13 loss to powerhouse Garden City last week.

He has a plethora of talented weapons alongside him in John and Ryan Ruisi, Nick Maresca and Joe Smith.

“I went to middle school with all these kids, so I know them already,” Fortin said. “Our chemistry is really good right now, it’s been amazing to be back.”

Calhoun coach Nick Rawls said Fortin competed for and ultimately won the starting quarterback job after arriving.

“Jacob is a great kid, and he’s got good size and good athleticism,” Rawls said. “We really like what we see out of him.”

This matchup wasn’t played last season. The Colts have lost the last five meetings against Mepham.

“We’re extremely pumped,” Fortin said. “Every day at practice, we’re talking about it. When we huddle up, we’re like, ‘We cannot wait for this Mepham game.’ We’ve lost to them five times in a row, so this game means a lot.”

Mepham registered an impressive 34-6 win over MacArthur last week. Adam Erlichman threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns, while Lucas Eagleston had six catches for 202 yards and two scores.

With the game being played right after school, the energy should be high.

“I definitely think it’s a little unique,” Rawls said of the early start time. “Having an interdistrict game allows us to do that. I think everybody’s pretty excited for it.”

A four-year losing streak was nothing for this shorthanded squad

Anthony Martinez said the cramping started in the third quarter. And it never completely stopped.

The Lawrence senior, at 6-3, 205 pounds, played defensive end and offensive tackle in last week’s season opener at Oyster Bay/Friends Academy.

Martinez, who had nine tackles, never came off the field. Not for offense, defense or special teams. That’s what can happen when there are only 16 players on the game roster.

Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst was in danger of not being able to field a team this season. Two schools -- Port Jefferson and Amityville -- had to drop varsity football days before the season because of a lack of players. Lawrence was able to meet the state-mandated minimum for the season opener and managed to beat Oyster Bay/Friends Academy, 38-36, to snap the school's 28-game losing skid.
