A fan-designed jersey featuring the Islanders’ controversial fisherman logo appears headed to a resounding defeat in voting for the team’s third jersey for the 2027-28 NHL season, the Islanders revealed on Sunday.
The fisherman trailed a lighthouse-themed jersey 69% to 31%, according to partial voting totals released by the Islanders on social media. This round of voting ends on Monday at 5 p.m. at newyorkislanders.com/ fanvote.
The fisherman logo was not well-received when it first was introduced by the Islanders for the 1995-96 season. It looked very much like the logo from a popular frozen fish sticks brand, and it disappeared after two seasons.
In the other bracket, a sweater with “ISLANDERS” across the chest was leading one with an “NY” (with the “Y” shaped like a hockey stick) by a 52.3%-47.7% margin.
The two victorious designs will face off in a final round of voting from Tuesday to Thursday, with the winning entry to be announced soon thereafter.
The Islanders received more than 80,000 submissions for the contest, which began on July 8. A team committee whittled the submissions down to eight for bracket-style fan voting.
The creator of the overall winning design will receive a team-signed third jersey and tickets to the 2027-28 game in which the jersey makes its on-ice debut. The jersey cannot be used in the 2026-27 season because it takes two years to make an NHL jersey and get the design approved by the league.
