Michael Kay and John Sterling were longtime partners on Yankees radio broadcasts. On Monday night, hours after Sterling's passing, Kay paid tribute to Sterling in perhaps the most appropriate way possible.
When Yankees captain Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning against the Orioles, Kay took the opportunity to bring two of Sterling's iconic calls to life on the YES Network broadcast.
"High drive, right-centerfield, going back [Leody] Taveras . . . It is high! It is far! It is gone! Aaron Judge! A Judgian blast! Here comes the Judge!"
Of course, the call was a nod to Sterling's standard "It is high! It is far! It is gone!" home run call as well as his personalized call for Judge, just one of many memorable home run calls he had for Yankees players over the years.
Sterling, the longtime radio voice of the Yankees, passed away Monday at the age of 87.
