Tom Hanks, who last appeared on Broadway in "Lucky Guy," in 2013, is about to make his long-awaited return. The two-time Oscar winner will star with Tony Award winner Kelli O'Hara in "This World of Tomorrow," a new play based on short stories by Hanks that is set to open next fall,
The two stars both appeared in the time-travel romance when it was performed at Off-Broadway's The Shed last year, where it enjoyed a sold-out eight-week run. Set at the end of the 21st century, it will stars Hanks as a man who is determined to change his future by returning to a day in 1939 at the New York World’s Fair where he learns that the future is shaped not by technology, but by love.
Hanks' sole Broadway performance to date was in "Lucky Guy" by Nora Ephron, in which he played colorful New York City tabloid columnist Mike McAlary. The actor earned a Tony nomination for his performance.
O'Hara, of course, has been a mainstay on Broadway since making her Broadway debut in 1997 in the musical "Jekyll & Hyde." Since then she has appeared in numerous shows including "The Pajama Game," "South Pacific," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "Kiss Me, Kate," "The Bridges of Madison County," "Days of Wine and Roses" and, earlier this year, Noël Coward's "Fallen Angels." Throughout her career, she's earned none Tony nominations, with a win in 2015 for playing Anna Leonowens in a revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I."
"This World of Tomorrow" will open at a Shubert Theatre yet to be announced. Additional cast members will also be revealed at a later date.
