OFFENSE

This was a dud for coordinator Frank Reich’s group. Geno Smith and the offense didn’t get anything going until the fourth quarter after the Jets trailed 23-6. They totaled 157 yards and possessed the football only 17:15. Smith was under pressure a lot and wasn’t very sharp when he did get a chance to throw. He came in leading the NFL in completion percentage (75.5). Smith was 8-of-15 for 199 yards and a touchdown. Fifty-eight yards came on a TD pass to Isaiah Williams touchdown with 9:16 left in the game. The defense forced two turnovers and gave the offense the ball in Chicago territory. The Jets had to settle for field goals both times. Garrett Wilson only caught three passes for 27 yards. Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq didn’t have a touch. The Jets were missing running back Breece Hall, receiver Adonai Mitchell and tight end Mason Taylor, but there are no excuses for this performance.

DEFENSE

The Jets finally got their first interception in 21 games. Minkah Fitzpatrick ended the Jets’ NFL-record drought. They had three more interceptions negated by penalties. The Jets forced another takeaway and made a goal-line stand on the Bears’ first series of the game. There was some good, but for too much of the game, Aaron Glenn’s defense was on the field and being run over or giving receivers too much room. The Bears finished with 492 yards of offense, 232 on the ground, and had10 plays of more than 15 yards. The defensive line and the lack of a pass rush is starting to become a concern.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Jets were better on return coverage than the past two weeks, but they’re not breaking any long runs themselves to help the offense. Austin McNamara averaged 52.6 yards on his five punts and had one downed inside the 10 by Malik McClain. McNamara’s numbers would have been better, but Qwan’tez Stiggers committed a penalty that negated a 62-yard punt. Jason Sanders made two field goals but missed his only extra point attempt.

COACHING

The Jets knew Chicago would try to run it down their throats and they did that with very little resistance. The defense probably was gassed from how much they were on the field because of the offensive struggles. Still, Glenn’s defense sprung too many leaks and nothing he did to slow the Bears worked. The Jets were too undisciplined on defense. Reich’s offense regressed. They ran five plays in the first quarter, 16 in the first half and 32 plays overall.
